- Mac OS Recording with ScreenCam -

ScreenCam®, The First Screen Camcorder

1. Do you need to record a Mac OS screen? How would you do that? We get that question a lot, and actually, we have quite a few Macs running at SmartGuyz HQ. Surprisingly, you don't need a Mac OS version of ScreenCam. Here's a terrific easy practical solution!

To start, you'll need both a Mac and a Windows PC networked together. (Note: SmartGuyz is happy to provide the following explanation for you, but we do NOT supply technical support for this process, as many elements of this process rely on software that is not supplied by us nor is under our control). The strategy is simple: Use free Virtual Network Server technology to view the Mac OS running on the Windows PC, and use ScreenCam running under Windows to record the Mac OS screen! It's pretty straightforward.

2. In order to make this work, you'll need the following:

  • Virtual Network Server (VNC Server) for Mac OS: Click here.
  • VNC viewer for Windows PC: Click here:
  • A copy of ScreenCam from this website. The trial version will work just fine for testing purposes. You can get everything working to your satisfaction before your purchase.
  • After you download everything, install everything on the appropropriate machines and then continue.

VNC, if you are not familiar with it, is a technology designed to allow you to view and control another computer on the network. By running the VNC server on the Mac OS, you enable the server to send both video and control information to another operating system, in this case the PC that's running ScreenCam. You can pick up a freeware version of VNC Server for Mac here. Download and install the VNC Server. When you have it running, it will look like this:

3. With the Mac OS running the VNC Server, startup the VNC viewer software on the Windows PC. Make sure you put in the correct IP address information. For the example here, the VNC viewer would look like this:

VNC Viewer

4.Assuming you have the VNC Server working on the Mac OS machine properly, you'll see the Mac OS desktop show up on your PC! Cool!

VNC Window

5. At this point, all you need to do is to use ScreenCam normally. You can even go to the Mac and change resolutions, and the VNC server will adjust the screen dimensions accordingly. Here's a recording we made of iPhoto and Safari running on one of our Macs within 5 minutes of installing everything on the PC and the Mac:

6. That's it. Just record whatever you need to on the Mac, and with the powerful editing capabilities of ScreenCam, you can make Flash movies of your Mac desktop quickly and easily. Another tip: If you have only one Mac, you can accomplish the same result, assuming you have an Intel-based Mac. Just get some virtualization software like Parallels. Using a dual screen setup (easily done on a MacBook or MacBook Pro), run the Mac OS on one screen, use the VNC server, and connect to that machine using the VNC viewer software running under Parallels. Just another helpful tip from your friends at SmartGuyz.
